Folklores through Ink

Bodu Haruge Beach Villas feature 15 minimalist, black-and-white-themed villas that differ from the Haruge Beach Villas in both concept and colour palette. Each villa showcases intricate line art murals by artist Moosa Mamdhuh, inspired by seven short Maldivian folktales, such as “The Legend of Koimala” and “The Man on the Whale.” Mamdhuh’s creative process, influenced by Paul Klee’s idea that “a line is a dot that went for a walk,” involves translating ancient fables into his signature black-and-white style, blending intuition with careful interpretation of cultural stories. His murals cover entire villa walls, bringing the fables to life through a meticulous drawing technique using Posca markers.

BED FRAME MURALS

Maldivian Living Canvases

To complement the concept of minimalistic black-and-white line art murals on the walls of Bodu Haruge Beach Villa, it also features black-and-white photographs by photographer Hussain Annan (Ted) that are displayed above the headboard. These photographs, taken on various trips to local islands and a few from Oaga Art Resort itself, represent the rich history that Maldivians continue to preserve and treasure.

ARCHITECTURE

A-Frame Architecture

Inspired by the traditional Harugé, the iconic A-frame boatyard huts once found along the shores of Maldivian islands, the Bodu Harugé Beach Villas pay homage to a place where vessels were built, repaired, and readied for journeys across the sea. These humble structures stood as symbols of craftsmanship, resilience, and the deep relationship between island communities and the ocean.

Echoing this heritage, every beachfront villa is thoughtfully designed in the distinctive Harugé form, reimagining its timeless architecture through contemporary island living. Here, the spirit of Maldivian craftsmanship and coastal tradition is woven into every stay, creating a space where history, culture, and the rhythm of the shoreline come together.

MURAL POOL

Hand-painted Mural Pool

The murals in the pools are another collaboration between two artists, Mamdhuh and Mohamed Auzam (Keyollhu). They drew inspiration from the story in each villa and explored a different artistic style by writing parts of the story in Maldivian language (Dhivehi script) inside the pool. This creates an optical illusion, where, when viewed from a specific angle, the script can be beautifully read.

BATHROOM

Graffiti in Gifili

Inspired by the Gifili, the open-air bathrooms once found in traditional Maldivian homes, the bathrooms of the Harugé and Bodu Harugé Beach Villas celebrate the simplicity of island living. Surrounded by lush greenery, fruit trees, and centred around a traditional water well, the space is brought to life with playful murals inspired by the cats and chickens that freely roamed these cherished household gardens.
