There are some Maldivian traditions that begin with food, but are really about something else.

A neighbour sending a meal to another home. A family returning the favour. A box travelling from one doorstep to the next, carrying a little taste of where it came from.

This is the story of the thashibari.

What is a Thashibari?

A thashibari, or tiffin box, literally refers to stacked plates. Traditionally, these layered boxes were used by Maldivians to share homecooked meals with friends, neighbours and family.

The idea was simple.

You cooked something at home, packed it into the thashibari and sent it over. And when the box came back, it came back with food inside.

The thashibari travelled from kitchen to kitchen, carrying more than a meal. It carried generosity, recipes, stories and the little exchanges that turn neighbours into friends.

A story of two homes (A work of fiction)

Amina was carefully packing dinner into her thashibari when she turned to her husband.

“They’re new to the island, Hassan. We should welcome them properly.”

The couple had heard that Ali and Aisa had recently arrived from the northern islands. So Hassan carried the warm thashibari across the island and knocked on their door.

“My wife, Amina, cooked this for you. Welcome to the island.”

The next evening, the thashibari returned.

This time, it was filled with dishes from Ali and Aisa’s home, bringing a little taste of the north with them.

And so it continued.

The same box travelled between the two homes, carrying different recipes, different flavours and, slowly, the beginnings of a friendship.

What started as a simple welcome became a tradition of sharing.

The thashibari, Oaga style
