The vibrant coral reefs of the Maldives are not only a captivating sight for tourists but also crucial for the health of the ocean ecosystem and the livelihoods of local communities. Unfortunately, these reefs have faced significant challenges in recent years due to climate change and development projects.
Recognising the urgency of this issue, the management of Oaga Art Resort partnered with Coralive, a leading environmental organisation, in 2018 to establish a coral nursery and embark on an ambitious reef restoration project. This collaborative effort aims to not only revitalise the coral reefs surrounding the lagoon in which the resort is located, but also contribute to the larger goal of protecting and restoring these vital ecosystems across the Maldives.
Building a Brighter Future with Innovation:
The project utilises innovative Mineral Accretion Technology (MAT) in the nursery. This technology employs low-voltage direct current electrolysis to support the growth and resilience of over 7,000 coral fragments. Corals collected from the dredging project, particularly temperature-resistant varieties, originally formed the primary source material for the nursery. Additionally, such “corals of opportunity” are routinely gathered to maintain genetic diversity within the program.
Significant Progress, Ongoing Dedication:
Since its inception, the project has achieved remarkable progress. As of today, 300 reef structures have been deployed and populated with coral fragments. This significant milestone brings the resort closer to the ambitious target – the complete restoration of the house reef encircling the lagoon by 2028.
Beyond Restoration: Empowering the Community:
The Oaga Art Resort and Coralive partnership extends beyond coral restoration. The project actively strives to empower local communities by employing and training full-time Maldivian divemasters to manage the nursery and structures. Additionally, volunteer opportunities are available, fostering a sense of ownership and engagement among the local population.
