Aanlheoa: The Story Behind Oaga’s Welcome
August 18, 2026
Aanlheoa is our official Oaga greeting. It is our welcome, our hello, and, in some contexts, even our cheers.
Literally, the word is an exclamation upon the arrival of someone to an island. It can also be used to congratulate or celebrate something. But at Oaga Art Resort Maldives, Aanlheoa means something much deeper.
It tells a story about the Maldives, its people, and the way these islands have welcomed those arriving from beyond the horizon for generations.
The word Aanlheoa is rooted in the tradition of welcoming someone arriving on an island. Think of it as the joyful exclamation that says: you’ve made it, come ashore.
For us, though, it is more than a word.
It reflects something deeply woven into Maldivian culture and hospitality: the instinct to welcome people with open hearts.
Maldivians have called these islands home for centuries. Across generations, these shores have received passersby, traders, travellers, pirates, exiles, and people arriving from far beyond the horizon.
When a vessel appeared in the distance, its arrival meant a new encounter, a new exchange, and another story meeting the story of these islands.
And it was met with an Aanlheoa.
A warm welcome ashore.
In many ways, these arrivals are part of the story of how we became who we are today.
The Maldivian people are an indigenous island community shaped by centuries of encounters, exchanges, movement and connection across the Indian Ocean. Our culture carries traces of the people, places and ideas that have crossed these waters, while remaining distinctly our own.
Hospitality, therefore, is not simply something we offer.
It is part of our story.
We have always opened our islands, and our homes, with open hearts.
That spirit is at the heart of Oaga’s Maldivian experience.
Hiy Huba, Aanlheoa is our song celebrating that spirit of welcome.
When you arrive at Oaga, our Rahvehinn gather to sing, dance and welcome you onto our island. It might look like a funky little arrival ritual, but there is something much older behind it.
It is a piece of Maldivian tradition, passed forward and given a new life at Oaga.
So when you hear an enthusiastic “Aanlheoa!” as you arrive, know that you are not just being greeted.
You are stepping into a story.

As part of our 2026 reboot, we wanted to give this story a permanent home.
And so, the Aanlheoa Jetty was born.
Designed as part of the rebooted Oaga Art Resort experience, the jetty is more than a place to arrive and depart. Its form takes inspiration from the traditional Maldivian Haruge, connecting one of Oaga’s most recognisable architectural ideas with the very first moment of your island experience.
It is a new structure for a new chapter.
A place for Oaga to receive you.
A place for your final goodbye.
And a place that carries the meaning of Aanlheoa into the future.
Because while the jetty may be new, the spirit behind it is not.
For generations, these islands have welcomed travellers from beyond the horizon. Today, Oaga continues that story in its own way.
So, when you arrive, hear the call of the island and its Rahvehinn.
They’ll make your arrival known.
Hiy Huba, Aanlheoa!
