The Shape of Return: From Maldives to Singapore
June 20, 2026
Before the postcard. Before the horizon line. Before the surface.
The Maldives is often seen only at its surface — turquoise, pristine, suspended in paradise. Yet beneath that surface lies ancestry, rupture, craftsmanship, folklore, environmental vulnerability, and an ongoing negotiation between tradition and modernity.
This June, Oaga Art Resort brings a collection of contemporary Maldivian artworks to Singapore through The Shape of Return, an exhibition that explores the many ways we carry home within us.
Presented at Oevaali Art Gallery from 21 June to 5 July 2026, the exhibition brings together the works of 15 Maldivian artists whose artworks reflect the layered narratives of identity, memory, belonging and cultural heritage. Through painting, mixed media, illustration and visual storytelling, visitors are invited to experience a side of the Maldives that exists beyond its turquoise waters and idyllic shorelines.
Explore the exhibition at Oevaali Art GalleryThe Shape of Return is not simply an exhibition of artworks. It is a gathering of stories.
Originally commissioned as individual villa installations at Oaga Art Resort, these works formed part of Maldives: A Simple Story — a creative concept that transformed fifteen guest villas into immersive narratives inspired by Maldivian life, folklore, traditions and personal histories.
For the first time, these artworks leave their island home and come together in a shared exhibition, creating a collective archive of contemporary Maldivian expression. While each piece tells its own story, together they offer a broader reflection on what it means to belong to a place shaped by ocean, memory and community.
The exhibition features works by:
Alwan Ibrahim, Hawwa Lahfa, Hidhana Latheef, Zifla Ibrahim, Zuha Bari, Hassan Niyaz, Aishath Shuaila, Mariyam Halym, Baburu Akuru x Jille, Dhyna Shaheem, Emaz Shakoor, Aminath Fathina, Afzal Shaafiu (Afu), Mohamed Hisan and Aima Musthafa.
Representing diverse creative disciplines and artistic approaches, the participating artists explore themes that are deeply personal yet universally resonant. Their works reflect evolving conversations around culture, identity, memory and the relationship between people and place.
"Art is often the most authentic way to experience a place. At Oaga, we connect you to the Maldives through creative expressions; connecting you to different narratives; perspectives, cultures and most importantly, the people telling these stories. This exhibition brings to Singapore a glimpse of the extended Maldives story that spans across our island - it is a window to our veyoge gallery villas; that carries these simple, yet heartfelt stories."
— Nawaila Nashid, Director of Brand Experience, Oaga Art Resort
The exhibition is presented by Suvāsthi by Oaga in collaboration with Oevaali Art Gallery. Suvāsthi is the resort's creative platform dedicated to connecting travellers with local artists, cultural practitioners and storytellers.
Together, the collaboration reflects Oaga's philosophy of Fannuverin Fathururuveinnah — from artists to tourists — fostering meaningful cultural exchange through art, storytelling and shared experiences.
At Oaga Art Resort, art is not confined to gallery walls.
From hand-painted murals and artist-designed villas to performances, workshops and cultural experiences, creativity is woven into the fabric of everyday island life. Home to one of the Maldives' largest collections of local art and more than 300 hand-painted murals across the island, Oaga continues to serve as a platform for contemporary Maldivian artists and creative voices.
The Shape of Return extends this mission beyond the Maldives, creating new opportunities for audiences abroad to engage with the stories, perspectives and creative practices that continue to shape Maldivian culture today.
Admission is free.
We invite you to step into these stories, wander through memory, and discover the many shapes that return can take. Alongside the exhibition, visitors will also have the opportunity to enter an exclusive giveaway for a chance to win a Maldives holiday with Oaga Art Resort — an invitation to move from viewing the story to stepping inside it.
