Oaga Creative
Born in Malé in 1975, Afzal Shaafiu (Afu) has been creating art since the age of 18. Trained in Graphic Design, he began his career in advertising and spent 13 years at Maldives Post, where he designed several Maldivian postage stamps. In 2010, he turned his focus entirely to fine art, exploring social, political, environmental, and later, themes of consciousness and mental wellbeing. His work has been exhibited locally and internationally, and in 2014, he received the Maldives National Award of Recognition for Visual Arts.
La Fuh Dan Mural
At Oaga, Afu created an iconic mural on the former Hoba Deck wall, now part of Lá Fuh Dan. The mural tells the tale of the First Settlers of the Maldives, weaving elements of Maldivian ethnicity, heritage, and cultural identity into his distinctive visual language. His artwork has since flowed into the identity of Lá Fuh Dan and its neighbouring HippVan Bar, leaving a lasting mark on Oaga’s ever-evolving artistic landscape.
