Women in Art; From Subject to Creators.

Women in Art; From Subject to Creators.
Historically, women were often portrayed in art, but rarely recognized as the artists themselves. Today, that narrative has changed.
For centuries, art history framed women as subjects. Symbols of beauty, desire, virtue, and chaos. But rarely as the ones holding the brush. The key word being “history.” Oh, how the times have changed.
Women have always been creating. In studios they weren’t invited to. In movements that didn’t credit them. In history books that barely named them. They did not wait for permission. They redefined beauty and art on their own terms.
Across the world, the conversation around women in art has been evolving. Over the past decade, the Maldives has seen a remarkable rise in women artists shaping the cultural sector and redefining creative leadership.
Since Oaga Art Resort’s inception, we have proudly exhibited close to 50 women artists over three years through exhibitions, murals, performances, and curatorial work. From visual artists to cultural practitioners, these voices have become an integral part of the growing contemporary Maldivian art movement.
In a historically male-dominated field, Maldivian women are emerging as powerful cultural voices and creative leaders.

This momentum is powerfully reflected in the current Veyoge Gallery Villa exhibition. Ten out of the fifteen artists behind Maldives: A Simple Story are women. It is an extraordinary milestone and a testament to the changing landscape of art in the Maldives.
More importantly, it reflects a growing shift. Women are no longer simply subjects of art history. They are the creators, curators, storytellers, and cultural leaders shaping its future.

At Oaga, creating space for women in art isn’t a moment or a trend - it’s a commitment. A commitment to platforming their voices, celebrating their vision, and making way; for influence. And this story.... is only just beginning.
